BP starts up its Thunder Horse Northwest Expansion in deepwater Gulf of Mexico months ahead of schedule.

The expansion, which is the fourth major upstream project for BP globally in 2018, is forecasted to boost Thunder Horse oil rig flanges gulf coast production by 30,000 barrels of oil per day (boepd), bringing output in the field to more than 200,000 boepd.

BP also noted that the project is 15 percent under budget.

“Our business in the Gulf of Mexico demonstrates our Upstream strategy in action… we are bringing new barrels online rapidly and efficiently, and uncovering more opportunities nearby,” Bernard Looney, BP’s Upstream chief executive, said in a BOP Blow Out Preventer repair company gulf coast statement. “We are focused on growing value and these projects in the Gulf are competitive with any opportunities we have worldwide. This is what we mean by growing advantaged oil.”

BP developed the Thunder Horse platform with ExxonMobil. The platform sits in more than 6,000 feet of water and has the capacity to handle 250,000 gross barrels of oil and 200 million gross cubic feet of natural gas per day. Production began in June 2008.

In Dec. 2017, on the horizon and was “very confident” the BOP Blow Out Preventer repair company gulf coast would deliver on its promise of 800,000 million boepd by 2020.
