US Drillers Add Four Rigs
This week's addition of oil rigs was offset by a decline in gas rigs.

The U.S. added four oil rigs and dropped four gas rigs this week, according to weekly data from Baker Hughes, a GE Company.

Offsetting those gains was the loss of four gas rigs.

The nation’s total number of active rigs is now 967, down 80 from the count one year ago.

The following states loss rigs this week:

  • Alaska (-2)
  • Colorado (-2)
  • New Mexico (-1)
  • North Dakota (-1)

Louisiana and Oklahoma added two rigs apiece while Texas and Wyoming added one rig apiece.

This week marks the first that Texas has added rigs, following six consecutive weeks of declines.

Among the major basins, the Cana Woodford led all with the addition of four rigs. The Permian added two rigs.

Currently, at 441 active rigs, the Permian accounts for almost half of the nation’s total rig count.

The following basins experienced rig declines this week:

  • DJ-Niobrara (-2)
  • Eagle Ford (-2)
  • Granite Wash (-2)
  • Mississippian (-1)
  • Williston (-1)
