The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate grants its consent for the start-up of the Utgard field in the North Sea.

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) revealed Wednesday that it has granted its consent for the start-up of the Utgard field in the North Sea.

Equinor, which operates the field, is planning a start-up during the course of September, the NPD highlighted. Investments in the field development total approximately $302.3 million (NOK 2.7 billion), according to the NPD.

Recoverable volumes at Utgard are estimated at 56 million barrels of oil equivalents. The field, which straddles the UK-Norway median line, was discovered in 1982 and is located 13 miles from the Sleipner field.

“Utgard contributes to utilize available capacity on Sleipner, which is positive. The project ensures good and cost-effective utilization of the facilities and the process capacity on Sleipner,” Tove Francke, NPD North Sea south assistant director for development and operations, said in an organization statement.

“We expect Utgard will create value both for the Norwegian society and for the Utgard and Sleipner licensees,” Francke added.

Equinor revealed in January 2017 that the plan for development and operation for the Utgard field had been approved by authorities.

The NPD is a governmental specialist directorate and administrative body. Established in 1972, it reports to the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.
