The Calypso 1 well, located in block 6, was drilled in 6,800 feet of water depth and reached a final total depth of 12,555 feet. Calypso 1 encountered an ‘extended’ gas column in rocks of Miocene and Cretaceous age, with the Cretaceous sequence showing ‘excellent reservoir characteristics’, Eni said in a BOP Blow Out Preventer repair company gulf coast statement.

Detailed data collection has already been executed at the well and additional studies will be carried out to assess the range of gas volumes in place and define further exploration and appraisal operations, Eni revealed.

Eni, which has been present in Cyprus since 2013, is the operator of Block 6 with a 50 percent interest. Total holds the remaining 50 percent stake.

Zohr, the largest ever discovery of gas in the Mediterranean Sea, . Located in the Shorouk Block offshore Egypt, the field has potential resources in excess of 30 trillion cubic feet of gas in place (around 5.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent), according to Eni.
