Fluor says that it's the company's fifth major construction project in Freeport in six years.

MEGlobal, a unit of Kuwait-based EQUATE Petrochemical Co.

, has awarded Fluor Corp. a contract for mechanical construction of its new monoethylene glycol (MEG) manufacturing facility in Freeport, Texas, Fluor reported Monday.

“This is Fluor’s fifth major construction project in Freeport over the past six years,” Jack Penley, senior vice president of Fluor’s Construction & Fabrication unit, said in a written statement. Penley also noted the Freeport project will mark MEGlobal’s first manufacturing unit in the United States.

The contract’s mechanical construction scope includes the installation of equipment, steel and piping for the MEG process unit, Fluor stated. MEG is an ingredient in polyester fibers, plastic bottles and other items.

When it unveiled plans in 2016 to build the world-scale MEG facility at DowDuPont’s Oyster Creek site in Freeport, MEGlobal stated the complex will benefit from a long-term ethylene supply deal in conjunction with DowDuPont’s nearby ethylene cracker. DowDuPont completed the ethylene cracker last fall.

Fluor said that it expects the project to require approximately 1,000 craft professionals at peak construction for its scope. The MEG facility should begin operations next year.
